Electric Fence Installation
$Note: This article is intended to provide basic information and overall guidance on electric fence installation. You should always consult your fence manufacturer’s instructions and take all safety precautions before attempting to install an electric fence. If possible, consider using professional electric fence installation services and providers. As a livestock owner one requires a fencing solution that gives him/her assurance that livestock won’t stray out of their property. An electric fence offers this solution as when it is correctly installed it gives a mild electric shock that discourages livestock from going through it. Since we are dealing with electricity care has to be take as mishandling it comes with consequences. How it works An electric fence is a type of an open circuit, an electric charge flows through the wires at short intervals ranging between one and two seconds. When an animal touches the electric fence it completes the circuit and electric charge flows from the fence via the animal to the ground causing shock. Depending on whether it is a short haired animal such as some cattle breeds they require a minimum of around seven hundred volts for it to be effective while for long and thick haired animals such as sheep they require a slightly higher voltage of about two thousand volts. Depending on the specific animal it may require multiple shock experiences for them to respect the electric fence. Requirements for Electric Fence Installation Wire cutter, this is for both cutting and stripping of wires to size. A post hole digger. Electric fence posts. Hammer, screw driver and pliers. Grounding system, that is; three six feet galvanized rods and brass clamps. An electric fence controller. Ten to fourteen gauge insulated wire with a tolerance of about twenty thousand volts. Lightning protector system. Insulation wraps. Electric fence installation The first step is usually a precaution stage. Locate area for the ground system at least seventy five feet from any company utilities such as water and gas systems, metallic water tanks and any building metallic siding. Locate an area that has good soil and probably always moist for placing of the ground rods. Identify an area that is weather resistant for placing of the electric fence controller. Install the electric fence controller in the identified area and leave the/use only polarized cords do not plug in/switch it on. In the selected ground area drive in the galvanized ground rods and clamp the grounding wire with the rod. This then runs to the controller, the three ground poles should be connected in series either in a straight line or forming a triangular shape. Spacing should be about ten feet. Installation of the electric fence posts, this depends on the area to be fenced. Spacing ranges between twenty five and seventy five feet, the hole digger comes in here also remember this will determine the flexibility of the wire. Installation of the wire them comes next, starting from the farthest end use tight connections and correct splices. Remember to insulate the connections to help reduce corrosion. Spacing of wires should be about eight to ten inches, choose the most appropriate maximum height depending on the nature of your livestock. When wiring is complete use jumper wires which are of the same gauge and voltage as the main wire to connect the mains from top to bottom. Connect the top wire to the electric fence controller; recheck your system for any mistakes. Plug in and switch on the controller there should be an indicator to show its working. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage on the wires. It is always very important to install a lightning protector this ensures that lightning does not interfere with the...
